Trade Assistant (Steel Cutting – Band Saw & Cold Saw)
We are seeking a reliable Trade Assistant to support the fabrication team by cutting steel materials using band saws, cold saws, and other cutting equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, good mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safe work practices. This role is suitable for individuals wanting to build skills in metal processing and fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
Steel Cutting Operations
- Operate band saws, cold saws, and other cutting equipment safely and efficiently.
- Measure, mark, and cut materials to precise lengths according to job sheets or drawings.
- Perform correct material handling using forklifts, trolleys, or cranes.
- Maintain cutting accuracy and ensure parts meet required tolerances.
Work Preparation & Support
- Assist fabricators, welders, and CNC operators with daily tasks.
- Load and unload materials in cutting area.
- Maintain clean, organised workspaces (5S compliance).
- Support workflow to ensure production deadlines are met.
Quality & Safety
- Conduct quality checks using measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, squares).
- Follow all WHS procedures and safe operating practices.
- Report hazards, equipment faults, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Wear required PPE at all times.
Maintenance
- Perform daily maintenance on saws (blade checks, lubrication, cleaning).
- Notify supervisor of any major maintenance needs or breakdowns.
Selection Criteria (Essential)
- Experience operating band saws or cold saws (or willingness to learn).
- Basic knowledge of metal fabrication or mechanical processes.
- Ability to read job sheets, cutting lists, or simple drawings.
- Good measuring skills and attention to detail.
- Strong safety awareness and commitment to WHS.
- Physically fit for manual handling and standing for long periods.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
Desirable
- Forklift licence (LF).
- Overhead crane experience.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Mechanical aptitude or trade assistant background.
- Ability to operate additional equipment (linishers, drills, grinders).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift materials up to 20–25 kg safely.
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Good hand–eye coordination for operating cutting tools.
